PASSIVE HOUSES

ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS - FOR PASSIVE HOUSES.

A passive house combines high comfort with extremely low energy consumption. The concept of such a house starts from a set of principles that must be followed and fulfilled in order to obtain a low energy footprint.

These principles do not refer to aesthetic elements, a passive house having an image that depends only on the concept created by the architect and approved by the beneficiary. If some secondary construction elements do not have any special restrictions beyond compliance with the regulations in force, there are still some products that require approval for passive houses. The windows and doors of a passive house, for example, must have such a certification obtained after specific tests.

ELEGANT WINDOWS AND DOORS ARE CERTIFIED FOR PASSIVE HOUSES.

The main characteristics of a passive house are standard, regardless of the climatic zone in which it falls (from very hot, often humid, to the arctic zone). However, the measures that must be ensured by design (PHPP) differ from area to area or depending on the dimensions of the building and local orientation conditions.

The heating requirement of the space must not exceed 15 kWh/sqm/year or 10W/sqm in peak periods, for the habitable surface.

The cooling requirement of the space broadly is similar to the heating requirement, with a slight addition for dehumidification, where appropriate.

The primary energy requirement must not exceed 120 kW/sqm/habitable space/year to ensure heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic hot water or general domestic consumption.

The tightness of the space must ensure a maximum loss of 0.6 air changes/h at a pressure of 50 Pascals, certified on the spot in normal and pressure conditions.

Thermal comfort must be ensured permanently, in all habitable spaces, not exceeding 25oC in a period longer than 10% of the total hours, annually.

The 12.6oC isotherm shows the special insulation of the Elegant Deceuninck profiles. The warm inner surface prevents the formation of cold air currents or condensation.

The basic condition that windows and doors in a passive house must meet is that Uw (the thermal conductivity coefficient of the window) should not exceed 0.80 W/mpK. Thus, the window assembly must offer very good thermal resistance coefficients for each individual element: the frame and sash profiles, the glass package including the related rod.

The size of the window ensembles influences Uw. Knowing that Ug (the coefficient of thermal conductivity of the glass package) is lower than that of the profiles, the larger the window dimensions, the lower the percentage of the profile surface in the window surface, implicitly Uw is lower.

The temperature of the glass on the inner face of the window must not drop below 17oC on the coldest days, without heating input near or under the window. The installation of windows within the wall is also very important. The tightness of the window contour must be ensured, both inside and outside, with special mounting strips.

Elegant and Elegant ThermoFibra Infinity profiles are certified to be used in passive houses. Depending on the efficiency of the glass package, Elegant profiles can be used in passive houses in warm-temperate areas, in cold-temperate or cold areas (as in the case of Romania). The Uf coefficient reaches the value of 0.88 W/mpK, calculated according to ISO 12412-2 Hot box method, with a thermal insulation package of 44 mm.

A thermal insulating glass package with 3 glass sheets, insert of inert gas - argon, with 44 mm thickness and with "warm-edge" spacer, can reach Ug = 0.6 W/mpK. It results in Uw lower than 0.80 W/mpK. The fact that the Elegant profiles are slim, the contribution of the surface of the profile assembly is the lowest in the total frame of the window. The glass package can reach 70 mm, this being another factor by which Uw can be improved, by using some glass packages with very high thermal efficiency.

The use of Elegant windows and doors can also be done in renovated buildings or new buildings that were not necessarily designed as passive houses. The generic energy economy, durability, wide stylistic palette make their purchase a smart investment.
